“Steeples and Steel”
This year, Steelworkers’ Archives, the National Museum of Industrial History, and the County of Northampton partner for the ninth year of these highly regarded minibus tours. “Steeples and Steel” tours pay tribute to the thousands of immigrants who left their Eastern and Central European homelands during the late 1800s through the early 1900s in search of a better life in America. Many settled in South Bethlehem, became steelworkers and helped build their respective ethnic churches.
The guided minibus leaves from the National Museum of Industrial History, 602 E. Second Street, Bethlehem. Departure times are 9:30 AM and 1:00 PM on September 28, October 26, and November 9. Parking is available in the lot across from the museum.
On the first hour of the tour, through the neighborhoods and churches of South Bethlehem, a guide relates the history of working-class communities. Each tour enters a church or cemetery for a presentation. The second hour is a steelworker-guided tour of the flagship Bethlehem Steel plant site, including the Hoover-Mason Trestle walkway. The tour package also includes a lunch.
